Thomas Barkin Advocates Gradual Federal Reserve Policy Pace
Richmond Fed President Thomas Barkin says the central bank's policy direction is straightforward but requires a gradual pace to manage AI-driven inflation.
Richmond Federal Reserve President Thomas Barkin stated that the Federal Reserve's direction of travel is "straightforward," though the primary question remains the pace of policy adjustments. He advocated for a gradual approach to monetary policy to address current economic conditions.
Barkin noted that American businesses are facing broad-based cost pressures and plan to pass these expenses to customers. He specifically identified the surge in artificial intelligence investment as a driver of demand-side inflation and supply chain pressure, characterizing it as a factor the Federal Reserve can lean against.
Despite relatively flat incomes, Barkin observed that consumer spending has remained surprisingly resilient. He indicated that economic weakness is currently limited primarily to the housing sector and nonprofits.
