Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan Convene First Mecca Defence Meeting

Officials from Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan will convene in Istanbul on August 31 for the first committee meeting under the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement. Signed on August 7, the pact establishes a collective defense framework where an armed attack on one member is viewed as an attack on all, mirroring the structure of NATO's Article 5.

The Government of Turkey is hosting the meeting, which includes foreign and defense ministers and chiefs of staff. The agenda focuses on international security, military interoperability, defense capability enhancements, and joint industrial production. Turkey has indicated the alliance is open to expansion and identified Egypt as a potential candidate, though it maintains the pact does not replace existing alliances.

The alliance forms as a response to regional instability and a global energy crisis triggered by a war launched six months ago by the United States and Israel against Iran. The member nations, all Sunni Muslim allies of the United States, seek collective deterrence against Iranian aggression and missile fire. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan has reaffirmed his country's commitment to the strategic partnership and the collective defense pact.
