India Targets 10 Percent of Global 6G Patents
Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia announced India's goal to secure 10 percent of global 6G patents as the nation shifts toward a product-focused technology economy.
Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia announced that India aims to secure 10 percent of global 6G patents, signaling a strategic shift from being a standard taker to an active architect of international telecommunications. Speaking at the IFQM Symposium 2026 in New Delhi, Scindia reported that India has already contributed 8,000 patents, including 4,500 international filings.
To support this transition, the government approved 104 research and development projects totaling Rs271 crore under the Telecom Technology Development Fund in March. India is now collaborating with the International Telecommunications Union and the Bharat 6G Alliance to set global standards, while joining a partnership with the United States and 24 other nations to develop secure wireless networks. These efforts align with a broader goal to establish leadership in the digital economy by 2047.
Scindia further stated that India is transitioning from a services-led technology nation to a product-focused one. This evolution will be showcased at the 10th India Mobile Congress from October 7 to October 10 in New Delhi. Organized by the Department of Telecommunications and the Cellular Operators Association of India, the event will feature thousands of exhibitors presenting advancements in 6G, artificial intelligence, satellite communications, and quantum technologies under the theme Scale without boundaries.
