UCP MLA Shane Getson Resigns From Alberta Legislature
Shane Getson resigned as the United Conservative Party MLA for Lac Ste. Anne-Parkland, citing personal and family reasons for his immediate departure.
Member of the Legislative Assembly Shane Getson resigned from the Alberta legislature effective October 27, 2026. Representing the rural riding of Lac Ste. Anne-Parkland since 2019, Getson cited personal and family reasons for his departure, stating he could no longer provide the necessary time and attention to his duties.
Getson served as a former caucus whip and parliamentary secretary for economic corridors. His tenure was marked by several controversies, including participation in a 2022 convoy protest in Edmonton, criticism of Alberta Health Services during the COVID-19 pandemic, and remarks comparing transgender surgery to livestock castration.
Opposition NDP leader Naheed Nenshi characterized the resignation as a sign of weak leadership by Premier Danielle Smith, claiming Smith's caucus has lost faith in her. Getson's departure leaves the United Conservative Party with 46 seats. Because the next general election is expected on October 18, 2027, no byelection is required to fill the seat.
