Oxfordshire Transport Chief Approves 20mph Quiet Lane Limits

Oxfordshire transport chief Gareth Epps approved a speed limit reduction from 60mph to 20mph on Shepards Pit Lane in Stanton St John on September 3, 2026. The move is the first in a ten-road quiet lane experiment that uses physical blocks, such as bollards, to restrict traffic flow.

Thames Valley Police labeled the plan "highly inappropriate," citing concerns that unrealistic speed limits are difficult to enforce and could negatively impact road safety. Epps criticized the police for failing to explain the reasoning behind their objection and stated he would write to the force to question their stance.

Oxfordshire County Council officials acknowledged that the experiment operates outside national government guidance for quiet lanes. However, the council maintains that these measures are necessary to ensure road safety in the area.
