French Newspapers Sue Google Over AI Search Summaries

The General Information Press Alliance (APIG), representing nearly 300 French newspapers, filed a complaint with France's competition authority on August 11, 2026, against Google. The federation alleges that the rollout of AI Overviews in late July violates a 2022 compensation agreement by using press content without prior authorization or dedicated remuneration.

Publishers argue that these AI-generated summaries erode website traffic and advertising revenue by providing information directly in search results, reducing the need for users to click through to original sources. The regulator Arcom estimated that AI summaries are responsible for a traffic loss of 33% to 38% for news websites.

Google contends that the feature helps users discover new content and provides controls for publishers to manage their data. The company stated it has reassessed its payment system to account for protected content within AI features.

This legal action follows a 2024 fine of 250 million euros imposed on Google by the same authority for previous violations of the 2022 deal. The dispute coincides with a broader European Union investigation launched in December 2025 into whether Google breached competition rules regarding the use of publisher content for AI training.
