Polish Pilgrim Bus Crash in Hungary Kills 12
Twelve Polish pilgrims died and dozens were injured after their bus overturned on a Hungarian motorway, prompting Poland to launch driver working-hour audits.
Twelve people died and dozens more were injured when a bus carrying Polish pilgrims overturned on the M3 motorway near Mezőkeresztes, Hungary. The accident occurred around 1:00 a.m. local time on Sunday as the group returned from a pilgrimage to the Catholic shrine in Međugorje, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Local police believe the driver fell asleep at the wheel. The driver survived the crash and is currently in custody. Of the 59 people on board, 37 were treated for minor injuries, while 10 others were transferred to hospitals in Eger, Debrecen, and Miskolc with serious or life-threatening conditions.
Donald Tusk, the Prime Minister of Poland, dispatched a special aircraft carrying medical services and foreign ministry officials to assist the survivors. In response to the tragedy, Poland's infrastructure minister announced that the general inspectorate of road transport will conduct enhanced checks on bus drivers' working hours to prevent similar accidents.
