Shawn Layden Challenges Sony Strategy on PC Game Ports
Shawn Layden questioned Sony's reported decision to reduce PC ports of major single-player games to prioritize console exclusivity.
Former Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios chairman Shawn Layden criticized the reported decision by Sony Interactive Entertainment to limit the frequency of PC ports for major single-player titles. In an interview with the French media outlet PSI, Layden argued that releasing exclusive games on PC was designed to increase the visibility of the company's intellectual property rather than serve as a primary revenue driver.
Layden challenged the assumption that PC versions cannibalize console hardware sales. He stated that players who are willing to wait 18 months or more for a port are generally unlikely to purchase a PlayStation console. He suggested that the pivot toward console exclusivity may be driven by the costs associated with developing those ports rather than a strategic shift in market reach.
