Visa and Mastercard Launch AI Agent Payment Tools

Payment giants Visa and Mastercard are developing an agentic commerce ecosystem by launching tools that allow artificial intelligence agents to execute financial transactions. Visa introduced its Intelligent Commerce service in April 2025 and subsequently released a model context protocol (MCP) server and the Visa Acceptance Agent Toolkit. These tools enable developers to connect large language models to the Visa network using standardized protocols and plain language, reducing the need for manual coding.

Mastercard launched Mastercard Agent Pay, which integrates with Microsoft Copilot Studio and Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service. This system facilitates generative AI conversations that incorporate trusted payment services. Both companies are prioritizing security and fraud prevention to ensure that authorized AI agents can be distinguished from malicious actors.

Visa executives stated that the MCP server allows teams to move from weeks to hours when integrating APIs. Mastercard leadership characterized the launch of Agent Pay as an initial step in redefining commerce for the AI era.
