China Backs US-Iran Peace Pact and Calls for Ceasefire

China expressed support for a US-Iran memorandum of understanding while calling for a comprehensive ceasefire and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

The Government of China has formally backed a memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran that commits both nations to respecting sovereignty, refraining from military action, and avoiding internal interference. Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun stated that Beijing supports all efforts conducive to peace to help restore stability to the region.

In a meeting in New Delhi with UAE official Ali Mohammed Hammad Al Shamsi, Foreign Minister Wang Yi expanded on these efforts by calling for a comprehensive ceasefire and the restoration of normal navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. Wang Yi emphasized the necessity of establishing a new regional security architecture to prevent the Middle East from becoming a venue for major-power rivalry.

The United Arab Emirates expressed support for China's role in pursuing a political settlement and pledged to coordinate diplomatic efforts to protect international shipping and supply chains. These developments follow recent direct talks between the United States and Iran held in Switzerland.
