Charles Schwab Study Finds Consistent Investing Rivals Market Timing

Charles Schwab research shows consistent annual investing in the S&P 500 yields returns nearly equal to perfect market timing over a 20-year period.

A study by Charles Schwab Corporation concludes that consistent investment is nearly as effective as perfect market timing for long-term growth. By analyzing S&P 500 returns from 2005 to 2024, researchers compared the outcomes of two different investment strategies over two decades.

The analysis found that an investor who contributed 2,000 dollars on the first trading day of each year ended with a balance of 170,555 dollars. This result was only 8.3 percent lower than the 186,077 dollars achieved through perfect market timing, a strategy that assumes the investor could identify and invest at the lowest closing level of every single year.

These findings suggest that time in the market is a more practical and nearly as effective approach as the impossible task of timing entries. The research was released during a period of October market volatility, which has been driven by rising bond yields and investor concerns regarding capital expenditures for artificial intelligence.
