Aung San Suu Kyi Speaks With Son After Five Years
Kim Aris spoke with his detained mother, ousted Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi, for the first time since the 2021 military coup.
Kim Aris spoke with his mother, ousted Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi, on Thursday, October 22, marking their first conversation in more than five years. The 81-year-old Nobel laureate has been detained since the February 2021 military coup and remains under house arrest in Naypyidaw.
While expressing gratitude for the call, Kim Aris stated that "one conversation is not regular family access" and renewed calls for her release. The contact follows a series of recent actions by Myanmar authorities to loosen her detention, including the delivery of a package from King Charles III and the publication of photos showing her meeting a Red Cross representative.
Observers suggest these gestures by the government, led by President Min Aung Hlaing, may be an attempt to gain international legitimacy. The ruling authority continues to maintain her house arrest despite regional pressure from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, which has excluded Myanmar from high-level meetings due to a lack of progress on the Five-Point Consensus.
