Serbian Student Movement Demands Purge of State Officials
A student-led movement in Serbia is demanding the resignation of high-ranking officials and audits of public institutions after unseating Aleksandar Vucic in a landslide election.
A student-led protest movement in Serbia has demanded the resignation of high-ranking state officials following a landslide election victory that unseated longtime leader Aleksandar Vucic. During a press conference at the parliament building, representatives of the student movement called for the removal of police commanders, state prosecutors, and officials within state security and military intelligence agencies.
The movement seeks comprehensive investigations into corruption during Vucic's 12-year tenure. Activists are specifically demanding the auditing of ministries and public enterprises, as well as the acceleration of legal cases involving the previous government. A primary focus is the 2024 railway station canopy collapse in Novi Sad, which killed 16 people and served as the catalyst for the uprising.
Observers have compared the current unrest to the Otpor! movement that toppled Slobodan Milosevic in 2000, noting shared goals of ending state repression. While the 2000 revolt focused on European Union integration and Western relations, the current activists are now working to convert their electoral momentum into systemic institutional change.
