Honda and Nissan Negotiate Shared Vehicle Operating System

Japanese automakers Honda Motor Company and Nissan Motor are negotiating an agreement to jointly develop a shared operating system and onboard computer for new vehicles. The companies aim to implement the shared software by 2029, a move that would follow a broader strategic partnership involving Mitsubishi Motors.

While reports from Nikkei Asia indicate a deal is imminent as early as Monday, Honda Motor Company has stated that no agreement has been decided and the company is currently discussing potential areas of collaboration. Ivan Espinosa, CEO of Nissan Motor, confirmed that the company is exploring these software collaboration possibilities.

This potential partnership comes more than a year after Nissan and Honda terminated merger negotiations that would have created a $60 billion automotive company. The current focus on shared software represents a shift toward strategic technical cooperation rather than a full corporate merger.
