JoCasta Zamarripa Elected as Wisconsin Secretary of State

JoCasta Zamarripa won the Wisconsin Secretary of State election with 50.1% of the vote, becoming the first Latino person elected to a statewide office in the state.

Democratic candidate JoCasta Zamarripa won the election for Wisconsin Secretary of State on November 4, 2026, defeating Republican Jay Schroeder and Green Party candidate Pete Karas with 50.1% of the vote. A current Milwaukee Common Council alderperson and former state assembly representative, Zamarripa becomes the first Latina elected to statewide office in Wisconsin history.

Zamarripa's victory followed an extensive Latino voter outreach program that contacted over 54,000 unique voters across all 72 counties in both English and Spanish. While her opponent Jay Schroeder campaigned on eliminating the Wisconsin Elections Commission to restore administration powers to the Secretary of State, Zamarripa focused on using the office as a platform to advocate for affordable child care, stable housing, and public school funding.

Zamarripa will succeed Sarah Godlewski, who did not seek a full term, and will officially take office in January 2027. Her transition to statewide office will trigger a special election to fill her vacant seat on the Milwaukee Common Council.
