Jon Burrows Appoints Robbie Butler as Health Minister
Jon Burrows appointed Robbie Butler as Northern Ireland's health minister following Mike Nesbitt's resignation over a dispute regarding surgery services at Causeway Hospital.
Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) leader Jon Burrows appointed Robbie Butler as the new Stormont health minister on Thursday. The appointment follows the Tuesday resignation of Mike Nesbitt, who stepped down after a public dispute with Burrows over the proposed withdrawal of emergency general surgery services from Causeway Hospital in Coleraine.
Nesbitt accused Burrows of introducing a new "red line" on health policy without consultation and stated he would not be a minister who learns his leader's views through the media. Burrows defended his opposition to the surgery withdrawals, citing a lack of community consultation, and expressed disappointment over the resignation.
Butler, a former firefighter and former UUP deputy leader, assumed office with a goal to build a world-class health service, though he faces an immediate departmental deficit and budget shortages. Some political opponents have labeled him a "caretaker minister," urging him to prioritize patient outcomes over the electoral interests of his party leader.
The internal UUP conflict drew criticism from other political leaders. DUP leader Gavin Robinson called the resignation a setback, while Sinn Féin's Philip McGuigan and SDLP's Matthew O'Toole accused Burrows of prioritizing party squabbles over public health. The Northern Ireland Assembly's Health Committee convened an emergency meeting to question Department of Health officials regarding the situation.
