Hackers Expose Data of 25,000 Shinhan Bank Customers
Shinhan Bank suffered a cyberattack exposing the personal and financial data of 25,000 customers, prompting emergency inspections by South Korean financial regulators.
An unauthorized external party hacked Shinhan Bank, exposing the personal and financial data of approximately 25,000 customers. The stolen information includes customer names, phone numbers, annual income, and borrowing limits. Cybersecurity experts suspect the attackers used sophisticated AI agents to automate the search for vulnerabilities and gain access to a service used by loan recruiters.
In response, the Financial Supervisory Service launched an emergency on-site inspection to determine the extent of the breach. The Financial Services Commission scheduled a meeting with local banks on Friday to address the incident. This breach coincided with a separate data leak at KB Kookmin Bank that affected 119 customers.
Shinhan Bank stated it is not yet in a position to reasonably quantify the specific impact of the incident on its financial condition, results of operations, or business activities.
