UK Removes Planning Permission for EV Pavement Gullies

The Government of the United Kingdom removed planning permission requirements for electric vehicle pavement gullies to lower home charging costs for drivers without off-street parking.

The Government of the United Kingdom implemented new regulations on Wednesday removing the requirement for planning permission for electric vehicle drivers in England to install pavement gullies. These narrow cable channels enable home charging for residents lacking off-street parking, potentially reducing charging costs by up to 90% and saving drivers between £300 and £500 in application fees.

Despite the national policy shift and £25 million in government funding provided to councils, implementation remains inconsistent across the country. More than 20 local authorities, including those in Ealing, Kent, and Leicester, continue to prohibit the installations due to concerns regarding liability, accessibility, and safety.

Regional cost disparities persist for those who can install the gullies. Installation prices range from £250 in South Gloucestershire to over £1,200 in other regions, with some councils, such as Redbridge, imposing additional annual license fees.
