Australia Pledges A$600 Million to Fight Pacific Drug Smuggling

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that Australia will provide up to A$600 million ($430 million) to assist Pacific island nations in combating a sharp increase in narcotics smuggling. Speaking at the Pacific Islands Forum in Palau, Albanese stated that the region must work together to "stamp out the illicit drug trade" for the benefit of all neighboring countries.

The funding targets the use of semi-submersible vessels to transport illicit drugs, which has contributed to a surge in seizures. Regional authorities impounded over 17 tons of drugs this year, a significant increase from the 5.5 tons seized last year. Australia's assistance will include expanded aerial surveillance, regional police training, and improved coordination between the police and militaries of island nations.

In a related effort to maintain regional influence and counter Chinese expansion, the United States and New Zealand pledged a combined $60 million to upgrade a port in the Cook Islands. These strategic investments by Australia, the U.S., and New Zealand aim to prevent China from establishing new military bases or alliances in the South Pacific.
