Nigerian Airlines Threaten Shutdown Over Union Disruptions

The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) has threatened a nationwide shutdown of all member airlines if aviation unions again disrupt flight operations. This warning follows an August 11, 2026, incident where the National Union of Air Transport Employees and the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria picketed Air Peace at airports in Lagos and Abuja. The AON reports that the disruption caused Air Peace to lose over 2 billion naira across 70 flights and stranded 13,000 passengers on more than 30 United Nigeria Airlines flights.

The dispute centers on the right of workers to unionize and the payment of a five percent Ticket Sales Charge to government agencies. While unions claim airlines are blocking membership and failing to remit charges, the AON asserts that payments are being made under arrangements with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority. Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo previously intervened to lead unions to suspend the picketing.

Beyond the labor dispute, the AON characterized the August protests as "violent disruptive action" and a security failure, calling for an overhaul of Aviation Security procedures. The association also cited external pressures contributing to flight delays, including inadequate infrastructure, congested parking at major hubs, and Jet A1 fuel costs exceeding 2,500 naira per litre.
