Four Nations Condemn Postponement of Palestinian Elections
Foreign ministers from Australia, Canada, France, and the UK urged Mahmoud Abbas to reconsider delaying Palestinian legislative and presidential elections until 2027.
The foreign ministers of Australia, Canada, France, and the United Kingdom issued a joint statement expressing deep regret after Mahmoud Abbas postponed Palestinian legislative and presidential elections to September 11, 2027. The legislative vote was originally scheduled for November 28, 2026, but was canceled via a decree following an agreement between the Fatah movement and other Palestinian factions.
The four nations argued that the delay erodes confidence in democratic institutions and deprives a generation of Palestinians of their right to vote. While the ministers acknowledged the difficulties of conducting elections according to international standards, they called on the Palestinian National Authority to reconsider the postponement.
As part of their demands, the ministers urged Israel to avoid actions that impede the electoral process. They also reiterated the position that Hamas must have no role in the future governance of Palestine.
