OpenAI and Anthropic Clash Over Enterprise Strategy and Valuations

OpenAI faces investor scrutiny over its $852 billion valuation while rival Anthropic declines funding offers that would value the company at over $800 billion.

A valuation struggle is emerging between the leading AI labs as OpenAI shifts its strategy toward the enterprise market to compete with Google and Anthropic. Despite raising $122 billion last month from backers including SoftBank, Amazon, and Nvidia, some early investors claim the company has become deeply unfocused after pivoting its product roadmap twice in six months. These critics argue that justifying the current $852 billion valuation would require a future IPO valuation of at least $1.2 trillion.

Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar rejected these claims, stating that the suggestion that investors are not supportive of the strategy "defies the facts." She cited the oversubscribed nature of the recent fundraise as evidence of strong conviction in the company's direction.

Simultaneously, Anthropic has declined multiple venture capital offers for a new funding round that would value the firm at $800 billion or more. This potential figure would more than double its previous $380 billion valuation. The investor interest follows rapid revenue growth, with Anthropic reaching a $30 billion annual run-rate by the end of March. Despite resisting current offers, the company faces heavy capital expenditures, including a $50 billion commitment to build data centers and $30 billion allocated for Microsoft cloud services.
