Peacocks Stores Ltd and Cardzone Announce UK Store Closures
Retailers Peacocks Stores Ltd and Cardzone are closing branches in Pontypool and Newport due to lease expirations and declining high street footfall.
Two retail chains are closing locations in the United Kingdom. Peacocks Stores Ltd, a fashion retailer, will permanently close its Pontypool branch in Wales on August 19 after operating there for more than 20 years. The company cited declining high street footfall and lease expirations as the primary reasons for the shutdown.
Separately, the family-owned retail group Cardzone is closing its Card Centre branch in Newport. This closure follows a pattern of store shutdowns since 2023 in cities such as Blackpool, Scunthorpe, and Beeston, which the company attributed to difficulties in lease-renewal negotiations.
The Torfaen Borough Council responded to the news in Pontypool by stating it remains committed to supporting the town centre through investment funds. Despite these assurances, the closure has raised concerns among local residents and business owners regarding the economic viability of the area.
