Iowa Scientists Urge Legislation to Manage Data Center Growth

A coalition of 186 scientists from 31 colleges and universities in Iowa held a virtual summit to address the environmental and economic strain caused by the rapid expansion of data centers. The group released the Iowa Climate Statement, which calls on state lawmakers to enact legislation helping the state adapt to surging energy demands.

Scientists argue that utility companies must prioritize renewable energy over fossil fuels to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and avoid volatile fuel prices. The push follows a significant increase in infrastructure, with the state currently hosting 91 data centers and another 42 planned or under construction. In cities like Dubuque, this growth has sparked local concerns regarding water supply stability and rising electricity costs for residents.

The group highlighted a disparity in how utility providers are meeting these demands. MidAmerican Energy currently utilizes 69% renewable generation, while Alliant Energy provides only 38% from renewable sources.
