Obama-Era Probe Found Evidence of Ilhan Omar Marriage Fraud
Federal records reveal an Obama-administration investigation found evidence that Representative Ilhan Omar entered a sham marriage in 2009 to assist a man in obtaining a green card.
An investigation conducted during the Obama administration found evidence that Ilhan Omar entered into a sham marriage in 2009 with a man suspected of being her brother to help him obtain a green card. The Federal Bureau of Investigations and the Department of Homeland Security investigated the matter in 2016, but prosecutors did not pursue the case because the potential felony fell outside the five-year statute of limitations.
The United States Department of Justice has further suggested in a court filing that Omar may have used an alias, referring to her as Ilhan Nur Said Elmi. Federal authorities are also examining whether her father provided false information on immigration forms. Omar has denied any wrongdoing and previously described the marriage allegations as a right-wing conspiracy theory.
These findings contrast with recent statements from former President Barack Obama, who criticized investigations into Omar as an attack on democracy. Obama previously claimed that investigators were attempting to uncover a smoking gun that did not exist.
