Reno and Sparks Mayoral Candidates Debate Budget and Development

Mayoral candidates from Reno and Sparks met Thursday night at the National Automobile Museum for a 90-minute debate hosted by Sierra Nevada Realtors. The candidates addressed critical local issues, including housing affordability for northern Nevada residents and city fiscal management.

In the Reno race, Kathleen Taylor emphasized her record of fiscal restraint, noting her support for 40 position freezes and $16 million in budget cuts. Her opponent, Kate Marshall, argued for a different approach to efficiency, calling for a city audit to identify redundancies.

Meanwhile, the Sparks mayoral contest focused on industrial development. Challenger Wendi Rawson opposed the construction of data centers in the city, suggesting that the TRIC industrial center should be used instead. Incumbent Mayor Ed Lawson acknowledged the appeal of the potential revenue from such projects but questioned whether moving forward with them at this time was premature.
