Elon Musk Predicts Humanoid Robots Will Drive Global Memory Demand
Elon Musk claims humanoid robot memory needs will exceed all other global demand, triggering a stock surge for Micron Technology.
CEO of Tesla and SpaceX Elon Musk stated on X that the dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) required for humanoid robots "will exceed everything else on Earth." The projection triggered a more than 5% surge in shares for Micron Technology.
Musk's comments align with Tesla's production of its Optimus robot, which the company plans to ship to customers next year. Tesla aims to produce one million units annually at its Fremont factory. Micron Technology CEO Sanjay Mehrotra identified "physical AI" as a significant future driver for memory and storage demand, noting that humanoid robots likely require memory comparable to Level 4 autonomous vehicles, which typically exceed 200GB.
Broader industry trends support these projections. Toyota plans to deploy 400,000 robots in its factories, and Goldman Sachs Private Wealth Management forecasts that humanoid robot shipments could reach 6.5 million units by 2035.
