Reliance Jio Proposes 1,600-Satellite Network for India Coverage
Reliance Jio unveiled a proposed Low Earth Orbit satellite network to provide 100% connectivity across India's remote villages, islands, and border outposts.
Reliance Jio showcased a proposed Low Earth Orbit satellite network consisting of 1,600 satellites and 23 ground stations at the India Mobile Congress 2026 in New Delhi. Termed Sovereign Satellite Connectivity, the project aims to provide 100% coverage across India's land and maritime areas, specifically targeting more than 600,000 villages, islands, and border outposts where traditional fiber and mobile towers are not viable.
The system will integrate with the company's existing terrestrial network to create a hybrid communications infrastructure supporting direct-to-device calling, aviation, maritime services, and defense. Reliance Jio intends for the entire value chain, including design, engineering, and launch, to remain within India.
While the company did not provide a formal launch timeline during the event, IN-SPACe reviewed the plan in July 2026 and found it technically viable. Reports suggest a phased rollout beginning with a test flight in September 2027, with the goal of reaching a full constellation by 2035.
