Bahrain and U.S. Accuse Iran of Violating Security Agreements

Bahrain and the United States accused Iran of violating international resolutions and shipping agreements amid rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.

Bahrain and the United States have leveled accusations against Iran for violating diplomatic agreements and threatening regional stability. During a United Nations Security Council meeting on Resolution 2231, Bahrain's permanent representative, Jamal Alrowaiei, claimed Iran used diplomacy to delay action while launching ballistic missiles and drones at civilian infrastructure in Gulf states and Jordan. Alrowaiei specifically cited violations of the June 17 Islamabad Memorandum and Resolution 2817, warning that the closure of the Strait of Hormuz threatens the global economy.

In response, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused the U.S. Treasury Secretary of violating Paragraph 9 of a Memorandum of Understanding, asserting that the United States has a history of missteps while Iran has kept its word. While Araghchi is scheduled to visit Oman to discuss security tensions, U.S. officials reported that Iran attributed recent shipping attacks to rogue elements within its own system.

The United States is currently demanding a public guarantee from Iran to ensure open shipping lanes and a cessation of fire in the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. officials stated that military options remain available to ensure Iranian nuclear sites stay inaccessible. Meanwhile, the Emir of Qatar and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have met to coordinate joint diplomatic efforts regarding U.S.-Iran communications.
