Microsoft Mandates Xbox Age Verification for Australian Users

Microsoft Corporation will implement mandatory age verification for Xbox console and PC users in Australia beginning in late August 2026. The system requires adult accounts to verify their age to purchase or access apps and games rated 18+ by the Australian Classification Board.

Users can verify their identity using government-issued identification, such as passports or driver's licenses, facial estimation via selfie, valid credit cards, or email-based processes. Microsoft stated that the measures are necessary to comply with updated national classification laws and confirmed that games users already own will not be affected by the restrictions.

The rollout follows a December 2025 social media ban for users under 16 in Australia and coincides with the government's refusal to classify the horror title "The Halloween: The Game" due to its depiction of a controlled substance. The restrictions may impact access to high-profile upcoming releases, including Grand Theft Auto 6.

Privacy advocates, gaming activists, and developers have criticized the move. They argue that collecting sensitive identification data increases the risk of data leaks and facilitates government gatekeeping.
