India Bank Deposits Hit Highest Level Since 2016

The Reserve Bank of India reports record deposit and credit growth driven by a special foreign currency swap facility and strong economic resilience.

Bank deposit growth in India reached 15.4 per cent year-on-year as of July 31, the highest level since December 2016. According to data from the Reserve Bank of India, aggregate deposits rose by Rs 6.61 trillion during the fortnight ending July 31, bringing the total outstanding deposit base to Rs 269.41 trillion. This surge was primarily driven by time deposits and a special FCNR(B) swap facility introduced in June, which allows the central bank to bear full hedging costs for eligible deposits.

Bank credit growth simultaneously accelerated to 19.3 per cent, the highest since May 2024. This growth narrowed the gap between credit and deposit growth to 3.95 percentage points. By August 13, the Reserve Bank of India had raised $52.3 billion under the concessional swap facility, with total mobilization expected to reach between $80 billion and $85 billion.

The State Bank of India's Economic Research Department projects that India will remain one of the world's fastest-growing economies, forecasting real GDP growth of 8 per cent for Q1 FY27. Group Chief Economic Adviser Soumya Kanti Ghosh attributed this resilience to buoyant corporate results, a reversal of Foreign Institutional Investor flows from outflows to inflows, and improved monsoon conditions, which reduced the nationwide deficit to approximately 13 per cent.
