Mark Rowley Launches Met Police Minority Recruitment Drive

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mark Rowley launched a recruitment campaign to increase black and Asian officers to better reflect London's diverse population.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mark Rowley launched a major recruitment campaign to increase the number of black and Asian officers within the force. Rowley noted a significant disparity between the workforce and the community, stating that while 46% of Londoners are from minority ethnic backgrounds, only 18% of Met officers are.

Rowley described inclusivity as an operational necessity required to maintain policing by consent and secure the trust of minority ethnic communities. He rejected arguments from right-wing critics that diversity, equity, and inclusivity initiatives lower professional standards, characterizing the surrounding political debate as toxicity.

The drive follows the 2023 Casey report, which concluded the force was institutionally racist, misogynistic, and homophobic. While Rowley accepted the report's findings regarding systemic bias, he rejected the specific use of the term institutional.

Leroy Logan, the former chair of the Black Police Association, criticized the initiative. Logan argued that the force has regressed since the 1999 Macpherson inquiry and claimed the Met is still seen as a safe haven for white supremacists due to a lack of leadership and culture.
