Liberia Hosts UN Dialogue on Climate and Conflict

The Environmental Protection Agency of Liberia hosted a high-level dialogue in New York on September 23, 2026, titled “The Nexus between Climate, Conflict, and Natural Resources: Pathways to Peace, Resilience, and Sustainable Development.” Held on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly, the event leveraged Liberia's seat on the UN Security Council to frame climate change as a "threat multiplier" capable of aggravating social tensions and competition over natural resources.

Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti formally opened the event, while UN official Haoliang Xu delivered the keynote address. Participants discussed how climate financing and responsible resource governance could prevent conflict and foster sustainable development across Africa and other vulnerable regions.

While the government addressed global security in New York, local infrastructure challenges persisted domestically. In Kpolokplah Town, Bong County, residents appealed for urgent intervention regarding a lack of safe drinking water. Representative James M. Kolleh promised to repair a damaged hand pump as an immediate measure while the community awaits a permanent water project.
