Ring Announces Smart Lock With Hand-Crank Emergency Power
Amazon's Ring brand unveiled its first smart lock featuring a manual power dial to prevent lockouts caused by dead batteries.
Amazon's Ring brand announced its first smart lock, priced at $249, with a planned United States launch in the first quarter of 2027 pending FCC approval. The device addresses battery anxiety through a built-in power dial that allows users to hand-crank the lock to generate emergency power if the rechargeable battery fails.
Ring founder Jamie Siminoff conceptualized the manual dial to solve the problem of batteries dying in infrequently used homes. The lock offers multiple access methods, including a fingerprint reader, a backlit touchscreen keypad, the Ring mobile app, and Alexa voice commands. It utilizes a replaceable Quick Release Ultra Battery Pack and connects via Amazon's Sidewalk network instead of standard Wi-Fi.
Alongside the smart lock, Ring introduced a new lineup of security cameras. This includes four 4K models—the Outdoor Cam 4K Plus, Spotlight Cam 4K Plus, Floodlight Cam 4K Plus, and an Indoor Cam 4K—as well as a 2K Pan-Tilt Indoor Cam.
