Quebec Liberal Party Sworn In as Official Opposition

The Quebec Liberal Party established itself as the official Opposition on October 19 following a significant seat increase in the October 5 general election.

Members of the Quebec Liberal Party were sworn in at the National Assembly on October 19, 2026, officially becoming the Opposition to the minority government led by the Parti Québécois. The ceremony followed the October 5 general election, in which the Liberals more than doubled their seat count to 40.

Liberal Leader Charles Millard urged his caucus to serve with clarity and humility. He positioned the party as a reliable partner for resolving crises but warned the government that the Liberals would be a "tough and unyielding opponent" if the government creates new crises. During the ceremony, all sworn-in Liberals chose to swear the oath to the people of Quebec rather than the King.

While the party currently holds 40 seats, that number may drop to 39 pending a judicial recount in the Vachon riding. Because of this uncertainty, candidate Affine Lwalalika was not sworn in. The event took place after the swearing-in of the Parti Québécois and before the ceremonies for Québec Solidaire and the Conservative Party of Quebec.
