Alaska Air Group Expands Premium Cabins to Boost Earnings

Alaska Air Group is introducing lie-flat suites and new airport lounges to increase margins and expand international service from Seattle.

Alaska Air Group is expanding its premium travel offerings to increase earnings and offset rising jet fuel costs. The airline plans to introduce lie-flat Aurora Suites on at least 25 Boeing 737 MAX 10 aircraft starting in 2028. It will also launch a Premium Reserve premium-economy cabin for Boeing 787s, Airbus A330s, and select MAX 10 aircraft.

To support these upgrades, the company will open new airport lounges in Seattle, Honolulu, and San Diego. These investments follow the 2024 acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines and align with a strategic goal to serve 15 long-haul international destinations from Seattle by 2030.

President and CFO Shane Tackett stated these initiatives could add $3 to $4 to earnings per share and increase margins by 2 to 3 percentage points. However, Tackett did not reaffirm the company's 2027 target of $10-a-share earnings, citing headwinds from high fuel prices, tariff-driven demand weakness, and a previous US government shutdown.
