India Retests NEET After Paper Leak and Student Suicides

The Government of India cancelled the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and ordered a retest for nearly two million candidates following a massive question paper leak. The scandal is linked to the suicides of at least 21 students, including 17-year-old Kahaan Patel in Ahmedabad and 23-year-old Pradeep Kumar in Rajasthan.

These deaths triggered a youth uprising in July, characterized by thousands of protesters in Delhi demanding accountability for systemic examination failures. The demonstrations were led by the satirical Cockroach Janta Party, whose pressure campaign eventually forced the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on July 25.

In response to the crisis, the government expressed sympathy for the victims and promised that affected families would receive the maximum compensation allowed under current regulations.
