India Diversifies LPG Imports to Offset Hormuz Closure
Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced India maintained cooking gas supplies by increasing domestic production and expanding imports to 41 countries.
Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced that India maintained uninterrupted domestic cooking gas availability despite energy supply disruptions caused by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. To offset supply shocks from the Gulf, the government increased domestic LPG production from 34,000 to 55,000 metric tonnes per day.
India expanded its import sources from 27 to 41 countries to secure its energy needs. The United States emerged as a primary supplier, now providing 67 percent of India's LPG, while Algeria also became a new source of supply.
To manage a panic-driven spike in cylinder bookings, which rose from a daily average of 51-52 lakh to nearly 90 lakh, the government conducted raids against hoarding and diversion. Puri characterized the crisis as a result of a West Asia conflict India did not initiate, stating that advance preparedness and coordinated action minimized the geopolitical impact.
