Vietnam and Laos Strengthen Ties Through Infrastructure and Finance

Vietnam and Laos conducted a series of high-level diplomatic meetings on August 27 and 28, 2026, in Danang and Hanoi to advance bilateral cooperation. The discussions centered on the mid-term conference of the Vietnam-Laos Cooperation Committee and the 19th meeting of the Steering Committee for the Cooperation Programme between their finance ministries.

Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng declared that consolidating solidarity with Laos is Vietnam's highest priority and pledged to remove obstacles for bilateral investment. The two nations focused on economic connectivity, specifically prioritizing the Vientiane-Hanoi Expressway and the Cha Lo border gate link to Vung Ang Port. Energy agreements involving electricity and coal were valued at $1.3 billion, while the Vietnam National Chemical Group continues development of a potash mining project in Khammouane province.

Lao Deputy Prime Minister Santiphab Phomvihane requested Vietnamese expert support in public finance and budget management to secure necessary infrastructure funding. In addition to financial and energy ties, Vietnam committed to providing 1,300 scholarships for Lao students and $44 million in aid for 2026.
