Bangladesh Seeks to Reset Bilateral Relations With India

The Government of Bangladesh is seeking to recalibrate its diplomatic relationship with India, moving toward a constructive partnership based on mutual interests. State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir announced that the government intends to move beyond an "India fascination" and treat New Delhi as any other country, characterizing the previous 15 years of relations as authoritarian and exploitative.

Kobir emphasized that this reset should occur through direct bilateral discussions and dedicated visits rather than meetings on the sidelines of multilateral forums. This preference was highlighted by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's absence from a recent BRICS Summit in New Delhi, which Dhaka attributed to the invitation being extended via a multilateral mechanism. Kobir stated that a visit by Rahman to India will take place once both nations agree on a mutually acceptable timeframe.

While the foreign ministry pushes for a reset, other officials have expressed skepticism. Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad Bir Bikram criticized India for providing shelter to ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, stating that allowing her to conduct politics from Indian soil is not desirable. Despite these tensions, Bangladesh is reviewing 101 memorandums of understanding through a parliamentary process and intends to host a BIMSTEC summit in 2027 while holding the organization's rotating chairmanship.
