Gunmen Kill Up to 50 Civilians in Northeastern Mali
Armed gunmen killed between 40 and 50 civilians during weekend attacks on camps in Mali's Menaka region, triggering mass population displacement.
Armed gunmen killed between 40 and 50 civilians during weekend attacks on camps in the Menaka region of northeastern Mali. The assailants arrived on motorcycles and targeted the Daoussahak community in the Tagadayat area and near the village of Tinabow, where they set homes on fire.
The Daoussahak community executive bureau attributed the massacre to the Islamic State, while security sources suggested the killings were retaliation for recent military operations. These operations included attacks by the Movement for the Salvation of Azawad, a group aligned with the Malian government, and a strike by the Malian army on a terrorist base in the same area on Saturday.
The violence resulted in significant population displacement toward the town of Menaka. Victims included men, women, and the elderly. The Daoussahak community executive bureau condemned the massacre and requested urgent humanitarian aid for the survivors.
