Drugmakers Target Hair-Loss Market With AI and Novel Treatments
Pharmaceutical companies are developing new hair-loss treatments using AI and novel formulations to capture a high-revenue market similar to the weight-loss drug boom.
Veradermics Inc. and other pharmaceutical firms are aggressively targeting the hair-loss market, viewing it as a high-revenue opportunity comparable to the recent GLP-1 weight-loss drug surge. These companies are developing novel alternatives to traditional options like topical minoxidil and prescription finasteride, which are often linked to side effects.
Veradermics Inc. has seen its stock price increase nearly 500% since February after reporting positive results for a minoxidil tablet for men and mid-stage data for women. Other industry players are pursuing different delivery methods; Cosmo NV is developing clascoterone, a topical medicine targeting hair follicles, and intends to submit a new drug application to U.S. regulators in the first quarter of 2027.
Technological integration is also entering the space, with Absci Corp. developing ABS-201, an AI-designed injectable treatment. Interim data for this candidate is expected in the second half of 2026. Unlike the obesity drug market, these hair-loss treatments are expected to remain primarily out-of-pocket expenses for consumers.
