U.S. and China Arrest Five in Joint Drug Operation
The U.S. and China arrested five suspects in a coordinated cross-border operation to dismantle a psychotropic drug smuggling network across four provinces and states.
The Ministry of Public Security of China and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration dismantled a transnational drug trafficking network in early April. The coordinated operation resulted in the arrest of five suspects—three Americans and two Chinese nationals—across Florida, Nevada, Liaoning, and Guangdong. Authorities seized quantities of psychotropic drugs, including protonitazene and bromazolam.
This operation is part of a broader trend of bilateral cooperation since 2024, which included the creation of the China-US Counternarcotics Working Group and the exchange of over 100 intelligence leads. In February 2025, joint efforts involving the China Coast Guard led to the seizure of over 4,900 kilograms of methamphetamine near Huangyan Island. China has also tightened export controls on precursor chemicals destined for the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Beijing announced the recent arrests days before a scheduled state visit by Donald Trump to meet with Xi Jinping in Beijing. While Yu Haibin of the Ministry of Public Security characterized the action as a deterrent to global criminals and a sign of deepening cooperation, U.S. authorities have not yet officially confirmed the arrests. The move follows a recent rare extradition of a Chinese drug fugitive from the U.S. to China via United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
