Sierra Club Challenges Meta Data Center Pollution Permit

The Sierra Club is challenging the air pollution permit issued to Meta's Hyperion data center in Richland Parish, Louisiana. The environmental organization alleges that the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality improperly granted a minor source permit in June 2026 by failing to account for the total volume of harmful emissions.

The dispute centers on whether the facility's total pollution, including emissions from 44 natural gas water boilers and emergency diesel generators, exceeds the 100-ton annual threshold. The Sierra Club argues that these levels necessitate a more restrictive major source permit and is calling for a public hearing, onsite air monitoring, and the consideration of battery storage alternatives.

Meta maintains that the minor source permit is appropriate, stating that the diesel generators are intended for emergency backup rather than continuous operation. The facility's initial permitting process involved applications from Laidley Llc, which holds a 20% share of the center, and Entergy, which permitted the 10 natural gas-fueled turbines providing electricity to the site.
