Polish Committee Recommends State Tribunal Trial for Adam Glapinski

A Polish parliamentary committee recommended bringing central bank governor Adam Glapinski before the State Tribunal for alleged constitutional violations and politicization of monetary policy.

A Polish parliamentary committee has recommended that Adam Glapinski, the governor of the central bank, be brought before the State Tribunal for alleged constitutional violations. Committee Chairman Zdzislaw Gawlik announced Friday that allegations against Glapinski are well-founded, specifically accusing him of politicizing the central bank and indirectly financing the budget deficit through unauthorized asset purchases between 2020 and 2021.

Glapinski denies the claims, describing the proceedings as completely unfounded and asserting that the government has no right to interfere with monetary policy. The governor, who is associated with the former Law and Justice party, is currently serving a term that ends in June 2028.

The report now moves to the Sejm for a vote that could result in Glapinski's suspension. A legal conflict persists over the required voting threshold; the current government does not recognize a 2024 Constitutional Tribunal ruling that mandates a three-fifths majority, preferring the standard absolute majority.
