FBI Director Kash Patel Returns Looted Papuan Artifacts to Indonesia

FBI Director Kash Patel returned a collection of looted cultural artifacts from Indonesia's Papua region to President Prabowo Subianto during a meeting at the president's residence in Jakarta on July 22, 2026. The repatriated items, which include ceremonial objects and polished stone ax heads from the Lake Sentani communities and the Asmat and Dani tribes, had been illegally smuggled into the United States.

The recovery followed provenance research conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Indonesia's Ministry of Culture. Culture Minister Fadli Zon announced that the artifacts will be displayed at the National Museum to help restore the nation's cultural sovereignty. This handover follows another recent repatriation on July 10, when two eighth-century Buddhist sculptures were returned by U.S. authorities.

These returns signal expanding cooperation between the United States and Indonesia to combat illicit antiquities trafficking. Beyond U.S. efforts, Indonesia is currently pursuing the repatriation of the Sangguran inscription from Scotland and the Pucangan inscription from West Bengal, India, while expecting the return of a plaque and a copy of the Qur’an from the Netherlands.
