Government Shutdown Disrupts US Military Pay and Readiness

The federal government shutdown has entered its second week, creating financial instability for U.S. military families and operational disruptions across Department of Defense installations. Families are preparing for potential missed paychecks scheduled for October 15, leading to an increase in bridge loan requests and a higher reliance on military food pantries.

Pete Hegseth, the Secretary of Defense, blamed Democrats for the legislative stalemate. He warned that a prolonged shutdown would eventually degrade mission readiness and capability, noting that the inability to maintain training and payment schedules makes the force less capable of being mission ready.

Operational impacts include the mass cancellation of extracurricular activities and after-school programs at Department of Defense schools, such as those at Stuttgart High School in Germany, though some have been later reclassified as excepted activities. Additionally, National Guard and reserve service members face possible cancellations of monthly drills, which threaten both household income and critical readiness certifications.

Kathy Roth-Douquet, CEO of Blue Star Families, highlighted the fragility of military household finances, stating that missing a single paycheck puts families at serious risk. She noted that nearly one in four military families struggles to put food on the table, making the shutdown destabilizing for both households and military readiness.
