SERAP Demands INEC Disclose Political Donation Limits for 2027

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has issued a Freedom of Information request to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), demanding the disclosure of political contribution limits and party financial records for the 2027 general elections. In a letter dated August 22, 2026, the organization urged INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan to clarify if the commission has exercised its statutory powers under Section 91 of the Electoral Act 2026 to limit political donations.

SERAP is seeking the publication of party assets, liabilities, and audited accounts from 2023 to 2025, alongside the commission's monitoring plans for cash, in-kind, and digital financing. The organization warned that the increasing monetisation of Nigerian elections and the potential misuse of state institutions threaten democratic integrity. SERAP has given INEC a seven-day ultimatum to comply with the request or face legal action.

Separately, Professor Amupitan announced that INEC will conduct a nationwide test run of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and other electoral equipment in November. This initiative aims to address technical challenges before the 2027 polls.
