Lebanon Establishes Pilot Zones to Reassert State Authority

The Government of Lebanon has established three pilot zones in south Lebanon to reassert state authority and rebuild public trust. In these areas, the Lebanese Armed Forces manage infrastructure reconstruction to replace the influence of Hezbollah-allied bodies.

These efforts face significant obstacles from ongoing Israeli occupation and shelling. In Zawtar, Israeli troops destroyed a school, clinic, and municipal building near one of the pilot zones. Lebanese security officials warn that the state's legitimacy depends on a clear timetable for Israeli withdrawal to avoid appearing as a proxy for foreign interests.

Internal divisions persist as the state struggles to match the comprehensive social services provided by Hezbollah, which include healthcare, housing, and stipends for displaced families. While the United States and Israel pressure the government to disarm Hezbollah, supporters of the group accuse the state of failing to respond effectively to Israeli attacks.
