UK Food Prices Rise as Middle East Conflict Hits Energy Costs

Conflict between the U.S., Israel, and Iran has disrupted oil and gas supplies, driving up energy and transport costs across the United Kingdom. These pressures are increasing the price of staple produce, including tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers, as fuel prices raise the cost of heating glasshouses and maintaining temperature-controlled supply chains.

Jimmy Russo, president of the Lea Valley Growers' Association, reported that gas prices for greenhouses have increased by approximately 90%, with fertilizer costs also surging. The Food and Drink Federation expects UK food inflation to reach at least 9 percent by the end of the year, warning that reduced availability and higher prices for salad items will persist even if the conflict eases.

Beyond produce, prices for bread, dairy, and meat are expected to rise by 5 to 9 percent. Sebrina McCullough of Money Wellness warned that these unstable global oil markets risk triggering a second wave of the cost of living crisis, a critical development given that roughly 25 percent of UK adults have fewer than £100 in savings.
